No. You call us directly and we proceed with a consultation and cleaning.
Visiting a dentist for your regular 6 month checkup is recommended and is perfectly fine during pregnancy.
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can sometimes include gums being inflamed. As a result, keeping a regular schedule of check-up visits is very important.
If possible, postpone any major dental work until after the first trimester.
However, if you have a dental emergency, don't wait! Infections in the mouth can be harmful to you and your baby. See your dentist immediately, and make sure that all dental professionals who examine you are aware you're pregnant.
Studies have shown that it is safe to have your teeth X-rayed while pregnant, as dental X-rays pose little little exposure to the uterus and developing fetus.
At Montreal West Dentistry, we delay taking a dental X-ray until after a pregnancy, unless an extreme emergency requires an X-ray to help us see the underlying problem.
Even though radiation from dental X-rays is extremely low and poses little risk, should you require an X-ray, your dentist or hygienist will cover you with a leaded apron that minimizes exposure to the abdomen. Your throat will be covered by a leaded collar to protect your thyroid from radiation.
